In 1990 our family moved to Central New York and Custom Woodcraft. The business started as a two-man operation, eight years later we were up to eight men, and with our growing operation we added an addition to our building. The family has always been actively involved in the business, which is now a 15 person operation, and if it wasn’t for the family we would not have the Bed & Breakfast.
Purchased in June 2011, the home was a family a family project that my children took interest in. They put in a lot of hours on the property, as the the home hadn’t been maintained in many years. The grounds were overgrown and there were many things that needed to be repaired.
One of the bigger projects on the property was the hop house. When the hop house was originally built, the family that owned it used the house as a large farm and a cannery. The property stretched over 100 acres with over 40 orchard trees, including apple, pear, and peach trees. When we purchased the property the roof on the hop house was gone, but the kiln was still attached. There were just a few posts and beams laying around.
With the many pictures that have accumulated over the years, we had a good reference point on how to restore the hop house to it’s original style. Custom Woodcraft has imitated the wood, which was replaced by walnut but with the same style and cuts.
In the main house all of the original structures are still in place, we just updated the kitchen with modern countertops, cabinets and appliances.
